There were three nominees received from the Mississippi College Communications Department.  Brandon Allen, Victor Barnette, and Michael Felder were interviewed by the station’s General Manager, Gwen Rakestraw.  Upon completion of the interviews and review of the packages submitted, Victor Barnette was selected as the 2013 recipient of the New South Radio, Inc Award.  On Monday, April 29, 2013 Victor Barnette was presented with a $500.00 Scholarship at New South Radio’s office in Ridgeland, MS.
The Radio People of Jackson hosted three interns during this reporting period.  All three interns attended Mississippi College where they are pursuing degrees in broadcasting.
  • Christine Wyne served as an intern with The Radio People of Jackson representing WJKK, WYOY, WJXN, and WUSJ from January 2013 through March 2013.  Her primary responsibility was with WYOY as an on-air intern, board operator for remotes, and remote assistant.   The Radio People were very pleased with the work Christine accomplished as an intern.  Upon completion of her internship she demonstrated a good working knowledge of broadcasting, with a strong sense of purpose and professionalism.  We would endorse Christine for a career in broadcasting.
  • Victor Barnette served as an intern with the Radio People of Jackson from February 2013 through May 2013.  A few of the broadcasting responsibilities that Victor was introduced to were: Sales, Production, On-Air situations, Public Appearances, and Promotions.  Although his experience level at the start of his internship was limited, Victor was an eager learner and soon achieved the trust and confidence of The Radio People staff.  Due to his great attitude and willingness to learn he was trusted with more and more responsibilities.  Victor has a bright future in broadcasting and will be an asset to any business he chooses to be a part of.
  • Our third intern was an international student from China who was a graduate student at Mississippi College.  Feng Zhou interned during the 2013 Fall Semester and focused most of his time experiencing the broadcasting side of radio.  He became a member of Q101’s  “The Showgram with Nate and Murphy”, where he played on-air games with listeners and even had his own segments; “Name That Feng” and “What Feng Says”.   Feng was a wonderful addition to The Radio People.  Not only was he very eager to learn how radio works in America, but he also gave the people who were fortunate enough to spend time with him a look at how radio works in China.  From October 7, 2013 to November 27, 2013 Feng spent over one hundred hours at the radio station and remotes.  Feng has expressed that his time at the radio station was very beneficial and that it has inspired him to return to China and incorporate some of the changes he has learned about radio while working at New South Radio, Inc.
